Continuing its proud democratic tradition since independence in 1947, India will go to polls beginning April 7, 2014 to elect 543 Members of Parliament to the 16thLok Sabha (Lower House of the Parliament). The general elections will be held over nine days during April 7 – May 12.
 

A gigantic logistics exercise, the general elections in India involve about 814 million voters – more than the entire population of North America, or Europe.These voters will exercise their democratic right to cast vote through over 1.8 million electronic voting machines at about 930,000 polling stations all over the country.
 

The hundreds of millions of votes will be counted on May 16 and the elections results announced the same day.
 

The polling schedule indicating the states and union territories going to polls is given in the table below (the figure in brackets indicates the number of constituencies going to polls on a given day):
