On September 24, India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) or Mangalyaan achieved a major milestone when the mission spacecraft successfully inserted itself into orbit around planet Mars, marking the completion of a 680-million Kilometer journey through the Solar System. With this success, India became the first nation to successfully sent spacecraft to Mars in its first attempt and the first Asian country to reach the Red Planet. The sucess inserted India as fourth member in an exclusive club of agencies that successfully sent spacecraft to Mars following the Soviet space program, the European Space Agency and NASA.

Launched on November 5, 2013 atop a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, Mangalyaan made six swings around Earth to gain velocity and pointed its head outwards to enter a path to Mars on November 30.
